One of the most popular destinations in Oman is the former capital Nizwa. The oasis city, which is one of the religious and political centers of the country and is considered one of the most beautiful cities in Oman, is located at the foot of the Hadjar Mountains in the center of the country. The best way to get to Nizwa is by car. The region has a well-developed road network. The nearest international airport is in the capital Muscat, about 100 kilometers away.

17th century fortress

The popular university city, which should not be missed on any visit to Oman, is primarily characterized by spacious gardens and tall palm trees. By far the most impressive sight of Nizwa is the large fortress from the 17th century, which towers over the entire city and is visible from afar. The fortress in the center of Nizwa has a 30 meter high tower with a diameter of about 30 meters. From here you have a breathtaking view of the whole city. In the fortress museum there are exciting insights into the fascinating history of the legendary country. The fortress is open every day except Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It can be viewed on Fridays from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Entry costs 500 Omani rials (around 1 euro). Qaboos Mosque, the so-called Friday Mosque with its large dome shimmering in gold and blue.

You should also see the more than 500 year old Falaj canals, through which the water still flows to supply the city.

If you want to experience traditional oriental market activity live, you are also right in Nizwa. In a large soukh, in addition to traditional artisanal products, fruit, vegetables, oriental spices and meat are also offered. Of course, original souvenirs for loved ones or clothing can also be found here. A large animal market takes place here several times a week.
